The Syrian government and Islamic State (IS) insurgents are both committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, UN investigators said, and world powers must launch cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC) based on evidence against them, The Guardian website reports today (August 27, 2014).
Syrian government forces have dropped barrel bombs on civilian areas -- including some believed to contain the chemical agent chlorine in eight incidents in April -- and have committed other war crimes that should be prosecuted, they said in a 45-page report issued in Geneva today.
The report also said that IS forces in northern Syria were waging a campaign to instil fear, including amputations, public execution-style killings, and whippings.
"In areas of Syria under IS control, particularly in the north and northeast of the country, Fridays are regularly marked by executions, amputations, and lashings in public squares," the independent commission of inquiry on the human rights in Syria said.
