Afghan Soldier Kills US General, Wounds 15; Casualties Include Americans, Shooter Killed

A gunman believed to be an Afghan soldier opened fire at a training facility in Kabul and killed an American general, the CNN website reports today (August 5, 2014).

Rear Admiral John Kirby -- spokesman for the Pentagon -- said that in addition to the general's slaying, up to 15 coalition troops were wounded today by the gunman. The casualties include other Americans.

Kirby said that the shooter was wearing an Afghan military uniform and is believed to have served for some time in a unit of the Afghan armed forces. The shooter was shot dead by Afghan soldiers.

The general has been identified as Army Maj. Gen. Harold Greene -- the highest-ranking U.S. service member killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
