Ukraine Blocks 280 Russian "Aid" Trucks' Entry; Views Trucks as "Trojan Horse" Filled with Troops

A convoy of 280 Russian trucks reportedly packed with aid headed for eastern Ukraine today (August 12, 2014), but Ukraine said it would not let the trucks enter its nation, because the mission is not being coordinated by the international Red Cross and could be a covert military operation, the Newser website reports.

A Red Cross spokesman said he had "no information about the content" of the trucks and did not know where they were headed.

That has raised fears in Ukraine and the West, where leaders have voiced concerns that Russia could use the initiative as a pretext for sending troops into separatist-held Ukrainian territory. Recent Russian military activity -- including firing artillery rounds at a Ukrainian military base -- confirms that Russia is trying to take control of Ukraine.

Today's situation brings back memories of the large wooden Trojan Horse that the ancient Greeks gave to Troy as a gift upon "surrendering" in the Trojan War; however, the wooden horse was filled with hidden Greek soldiers who later exited the horse, resulting in the Greek conquest of Troy.
