President Obama has authorized U.S. flights over Syria to survey powerful groups of Islamist militants, The Daily Beast website reports today (August 26, 2014).
The mission -- which includes both manned and unmanned (drone) aircraft -- is expected to serve as a precursor to military intervention and airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria.
Syrian officials have demanded coordination of U.S. military action against IS, but Obama does not plan to alert Bashar al-Assad's government of any intervention in Syria.
In describing the hostility that exists between Obama and Assad, Ben Rhodes -- Deputy National Security Adviser -- said, "It is not the case that the enemy of my enemy is my friend!"
