Russia's troop buildup on the Ukrainian border increases the threat of an invasion by President Vladimir Putin's army, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said today (August 6, 2014), according to the Washington Times website.
"I think it's a reality, of course it is," said Hagel, who is in Stuttgart, Germany for meetings with his military leaders in Europe, including the top commander, Aire Force Gen. Philip Breedlove.
U.S. and NATO officials say there are now about 20,000 Russian troops massed just east of Ukraine's border.
The U.S. also says Russia continues to train and equip separatists battling Ukraine's government.
Last month, a U.S. spy satellite took photos of troops in Russia firing artillery rounds at a military base in Ukraine, illustrating Russia's effort to take control of its neighbor country.
