Pro-Palestinian protesters in New York yesterday hung a massive Palestinian flag emblazoned with the words "Boycott, Divest, Sanctions" from the Manhattan Bridge, as protesters marched across the nearby Brooklyn Bridge during a demonstration against Israeli military action in Gaza, the Times of Israel website reports today (August 21, 2014).
The flag was unfurled during a protest that organizers said was meant to "connect the struggle of the Palestinian population to those of oppressed communities throughout the U.S.," referring to the situation in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by local police.
Police removed the flag and said they were investigating the incident. However, New York City Councilman David Greenfield blasted the police department for not taking measures to prevent the incident.
Yesterday's protest in New York was the latest of many worldwide against Israel's military action in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge. Tens of thousands have taken part in other demonstrations across the U.S., the United Kingdom, Turkey, Germany, France, Italy, and elsewhere, many of which have taken on tones of anti-Semitism.
