Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has threatened to quit peace talks in Geneva if no serious discussions have taken place by tomorrow, the Russia News website reports today (January 24, 2014).
Muallem conveyed this to UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi today, the day the government and opposition delegations were due to start separate talks at the United Nations in Geneva.
The regime and the opposition have refused to meet face-to-face and are communicating through Brahimi.
Later, Brahimi said government and opposition delegates agreed to meet "in the same room" tomorrow. Diplomats say they are now aiming at small concessions -- such as local truces -- rather than an overall peace deal.
