Five Bodies Found in Southern Russia's Stavropol; Killed One Month Before Olympics in Nearby Sochi

Russia has put security forces on combat alert in the southern Stavropol region after today's  discovery of five corpses with gunshot wounds, barely a month before the start of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, the Reuters website reports today (January 9, 2014).

Stavropol -- about 190 miles from the Black Sea resort of Sochi -- is the gateway to the North Caucasus region, where Russia faces an insurgency by Islamist militants who have threatened to prevent the Olympic Games from going ahead.

President Vladdimir Putin -- who has staked much political and personal prestige in the Games -- has already ordered a beefing up of security measures nationwide after suicide bombers killed at least 34 people in two separate attacks last month in Volgograd, another southern Russian city.

The five corpses were found late last night in four cars in two separate locations in the Stavropol region.
