The Big News Network website reports today (April 3, 2012) that the nearly decade-long standoff between parishioners and St. James the Great Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts may soon come to an end.
Yesterday, the Wellesley Board of Selectmen signed a purchase and sale agreement with the Archdiocese of Boston to buy the church and the eight-acre site on Route 9 for $3.8 million.
Town officials say they plan to demolish the church and use the property for recreational purposes.
Parishioners -- who refuse to vacate the building -- have been occupying the church and holding vigils since the Archdiocese of Boston shuttered it in 2004. The last step for protesters to prevent the sale is an appeal to the Vatican.
