Cath. Bishop Punched in Face during NJ Mass; Rev. Manuel Cruz,63, Needed 2 Stitches on Lip

A 48-year-old New Jersey man has been arrested after punching an auxiliary bishop in the face during mass at the Cathedral at Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, the UPI website reports today (January 30, 2017).


The Rev. Manuel Cruz, 63, needed two stitches in his lip after the attack on January 28.


The clergyman of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark was offering prayers at a service when a man attacked him, knocking Cruz backward onto the altar.


Charles Miller was charged with simple assault. He was arrested by Sheriff's deputies who were providing security for the church at the time of the attack.
