Palestinian Flag Is Raised at UNESCO Building; Was Symbolic Ceremony to Mark Palestine's Entry

The France 24 website reports today (December 18, 2011) that the Palestinian flag was raised for the first time on December 13 above a UN agency -- the UNESCO headquarters in Paris -- in a diplomatic victory won by Palestinians despite stiff resistance from the United States and Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas looked on as the flag was raised and the Palestinian anthem was played.

UNESCO said the flag-raising was a symbolic ceremony "to mark Palestine's admission to the organization" that occurs each time a new member joins.

The Palestinians were admitted to the body in late October, when the UNESCO general assembly voted 107-14 to make Palestine its 195th member.
