Israel Freezes Construction in E. Jerusalem; Decision Expected to Mend Relations with U.S.

The Israeli government has imposed a de facto freeze on new construction in the disputed east section of Jerusalem, city officials announced yesterday (April 26, 2010).

The decision comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's insistence that construction would not stop, despite pressure from the U.S.

Some have speculated that yesterday's move is part of an effort by the Netanyahu government to mend fences with the U.S., according to the Christian Broadcast Network website.

Palestinians want to claim part of Jerusalem as the capital for their future state. As a result of yesterday's decision, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas indicated a willingness to start peace talks with Israel.
