Greece to Repeal Law So It May Prosecute Nazis; 50,000 Jews from Salonika Killed in WWII

The Greek Reporter website reports today (April 14, 2010) that Greece is about to repeal a law that stops it from prosecuting Nazi war criminals, which could allow Jews from Thessaloniki (Salonika) to try to extradite a former Nazi SS (storm trooper) soldier from Syria.

Sources said yesterday that an amendment to the current law -- in which Greece in 1959 gave up its right to prosecute Nazis -- will be attached to another bill being submitted to Parliament this week.

David Saltiel, the chairman of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, said that when the amendment is voted through, the Jewish community will seek to extradite camp commander Alois Brunner from Syria, where he is believed to be living.

Brunner was responsible for sending some 50,000 Jews from Thessaloniki to their deaths during the Nazi Holocaust in the 1940s.
