A top Department of State official has revealed that the U.S. military will remain in Syria for the foreseeable future, even after the American-led coalition completely defeats the Islamic State's physical caliphate, the Breitbart website reports today (December 12, 2018).
Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy for U.S.-led coalition against ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), noted that although the terrorist group only controls one percent of the land it once held, its "clandestine cells" will continue to pose a threat indefinitely.
He added, "Nobody is saying that they [IS terrorists] are going to disappear. So we want to stay on the ground and make sure that stability can be maintained in these areas."
ISIS's last stronghold -- with some 2,000 fighters -- in Syria is along the country's border with Iraq.
