US Opens Its Jerusalem Embassy in Ceremony; Israelis Kill 37 Palestinian Protesters at Border

The United States officially opened its controversial Jerusalem embassy today (May 14, 2018) in a ceremony that included a video address by President Donald Trump, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

Trump told the ceremony that the U.S. remained committed to reaching a lasting Middle East peace, although the move of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has provoked outrage. The move has also resulted in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserting that the U.S. will no longer be allowed to serve as mediator in any future Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Earlier today, violent clashes erupted along the Gaza Strip's border, leaving 37 Palestinians dead from Israeli fire and hundreds wounded in the conflict's bloodiest day in several years.

Tens of thousands had gathered near the border in protest while smaller numbers of stone-throwing Palestinians approached the fence and sought to break through, with Israeli snipers positioned on the other side. Palestinians insist that East Jerusalem must be the capital of a future Palestine state.
