Exit polls show that Ireland voted today (May 25, 2018) for abortion to be legalized in a landslide result of 69.4 percent to 30.6 percent in its abortion referendum, according to the Mirror (British) website.
Voters in the once deeply Catholic country were asked if they wished to scrap a prohibition that was enshrined in the constitution by referendum 35 years ago, and partly lifted in 2013 only for cases where the mother's life is in danger.
Thousands of Irish citizens living overseas traveled home to exercise their right to vote on the issue.
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who is in favor of change, said today that he was "quietly confident" the high turnout was a good sign.
