Russia has built a new bridge linking it to the Crimean peninsula -- which it illegally seized from Ukraine in March 2014 -- over the Kerch Strait and has opened the bridge to traffic, the Euro News website reports today (May 18, 2018).
The 19-kilometer bridge took two years to build and cost more than three billion euros.
Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko said the bridge would be used by "Russian occupants when they have to leave the Ukrainian peninsula [permanently]."
The European Union and the United States still maintain sanctions they imposed on Russia for illegally annexing Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in 2014.
