Trump Says He'll Lower Prescription Drug Costs; Hits Greedy Drug Makers, Pharmacies for Ripoff

President Trump vowed today (May 11, 2018) to "derail the gravy train for special interests" as he outlined a strategy to lower the cost of prescription drugs by promoting tougher negotiation, more competition, and measures to stop foreign countries from taking advantage of American industry, according to the NY Times website.

Trump said the current system has been corrupted by greedy businesses and middlemen who have made "an absolute fortune" through "dishonest double-dealing" at the expense of consumers who need medicine to extend or improve their lives.

"Everyone involved in the broken system -- the drug makers, insurance companies, distributors, pharmacy benefit managers, and many others -- contribute to the problem," he said in a speech in the Rose Garden.

Millions of Americans now order their prescription drugs from Canadian drug companies, because the cost of drugs in Canada is less than half the cost for the same drugs in the U.S. Canadian drug prices are much lower than those in the U.S. because the Canadian government determines the cost of drugs, not the pharmaceutical companies as in the U.S., which tend to set exorbitant prices for their drugs.
