Trump Relaxes Pol. Activity of Rel. Institutions; Says New Executive Order Protects Rel. Liberty

White House officials said President Donald Trump will sign an executive order today (May 4, 2017) to ease the enforcement of rules prohibiting tax-exempt religious institutions from politics, according to the UPI website.

Trump is expected to sign the order to mark the National Day of Prayer at the White House.

His order will give the IRS discrimination on whether to enforce the Johnson Amendment, a U.S. tax code provision implemented in 1954 that prohibits most non-profit institutions -- including churches and universities -- from participating in any political activity that would support or oppose a person.

Trump said this new executive order will "protect and vigorously promote religious liberty" for tax-exempt institutions.
