Iraqi forces pushed further into Mosul from the north today (May 6, 2017) on the second day of a new push to speed up the nearly seven-month attempt to dislodge the Islamic State (IS), according to the Reuters website.
IS troops tried to block the Iraqi troops' northerly advance into their Iraqi capital with suicide car bombs and sniper fire.
Iraqi troops killed some 30 IS militants and destroyed five car bombs before they could be used against them.
U.S. air support proved vital for spotting suicide car bombs and for avoiding targets where civilians were trapped.
