Russian President Vladimir Putin told the head of the European Commission in a private phone call that "If I wanted to, I could take Kiev in two weeks," the Newser website reports today (September 2, 2014).
Russia hit back today, saying "This quote was taken out of context."
European Commission President Jose Barroso revealed the details of his Ukraine crisis conversation with Putin shortly before the EU summit in Berlin last weekend.
Putin aide Yuri Ushakov blasted Barroso, saying that his words were "incorrect and beyond the bounds of diplomatic practice."
