Sudan Woman Freed from Prison,Death Sentence; Was Sentenced to Die for Not Converting to Islam

Meriam Ibrahim -- a woman sentenced to death after being convicted of apostasy and adultery -- was released from prison and her death sentence was overturned today (June 23, 2014), the Worthy News website reports.

Ibrahim -- a practicing physician in Western Sudan -- is married to Daniel Wani, a South Sudanese Christian. But as a Sudanese, Ibrahim is considered a Muslim by birth through her father's Islamic faith, making her marriage to a Christian illegal.

According to sharia (Islamic law), any Muslim woman who marries a non-Muslim man commits adultery; therefore, any children that arise from that marriage are illegitimate in the eyes of Islam. Ibrahim gave birth to a baby girl while in prison, and has a two-year-old son.

Last May, Judge Abbas Al-Khalifa told Meriam, "We gave you three days to recant, but you insist on not returning to Islam -- I sentence you to be hanged," sparking international outrage.
