Romney Debate Remark Rages Greek-Americans; "Down the Path toward Greece" May Cost Him Win

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made Americans of Greek descent furious with his "down the path toward Greece" comment during the third and final presidential debate, the Greek Reporter website reports exclusively today (October 23, 2012).

Posting negative statements on social media, Greek Americans showed a great amount of anger toward the Republican candidate after his comment.

While Greece is in fact in trouble and would have defaulted on its debt if the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) had not given it loans, there are many other countries -- including Spain, Portugal, and Italy -- that are also in an economic crisis.

Romney must have underestimated the large number of Greek-American voters, whom he has greatly disappointed. The U.S. State Department estimates that there are around 3,000,000 Americans who are of Greek descent. Moreover, democracy -- the form of government that originated in Greece -- has been cherished by Americans since the United States became a free nation, and the vast majority of Americans are grateful to Greece for being the harbinger of the democratic principles and freedom that Americans still  enjoy today.
