COMMENTARY: Israel Must Take Harsh Action Against Its Hateful Vandals

This week, Jewish vandals painted sacrilegious anti-Christian slogans on a church next to Jerusalem's Old City in what has been a series of recent attacks on Christian and Muslim sites.

The slogans -- written in Hebrew on the walls of Dormition Abbey -- included an anti-Christian and vulgar slogan defaming Jesus, saying, "Jesus is a son of a bitch."

Just how Jews -- or any religious group -- can be so vicious and defame the Lord so heartlessly is beyond our understanding.

Moreover, because God -- the Father of Jesus -- selected Jews as His "chosen people" and because Jesus lived His life on earth as a Jew for 33 years makes this hatred of Jesus even more difficult to comprehend.

Also, one would not expect a Jew to convey such hatred for Christ, since the United States -- which is a predominantly Christian-Judaic nation -- has been Israel's closest ally and has helped Israel to maintain its freedom on several occasions, dating back to the time when it helped Israel to become an independent nation in 1948.

Israeli President Shimon Peres condemned the vandalism, calling it "a negation on Judaism" that "damages Israel." Israeli Chief Rabbi Schlomo Amar has also condemned the vandalism.

We believe that Israeli law enforcement officials need to work diligently to find and arrest these hateful vandals. Moreover, Israeli courts must be harsh in punishing these thugs by sentencing them to no less than a year in prison.

This kind of punishment is the most effective way to deter these vandals from striking again. Needless to say, Israel does not need the embarrassment and the stigma that result from such hateful attacks.

Indeed, it is imperative that Israel take whatever action is necessary, in order to ensure that such vandalism will not occur in its nation again.
