Students at West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Virginia do not have to worry about getting an F, the Washington Post reports today (November 15, 2010).
Earlier this year, the school eradicated the standard mark for failure, instead supplying student with the letter "I" for incomplete.
Students with an "I" on their report cards can learn their lesson and catch up over the year, at which point they will be given a grade for their mastery of the material just like any other student.

In a way, it makes sense. The schools establish a curriculum that doesn't necessarily match the natural order in which any given individual learns various subjects.
ReplyDeleteTo my mind, it would be better for educators to identify what any given student is poised to learn on a given day, and work with them on that.
