The body of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica, where the faithful are paying their final respects and offering prayers, the Independent Catholic News website reports today (Jan. 4, 2023).
The Pope Emeritus' remains were moved from the Monastery Chapel in a private ceremony presided over by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter's on January 2.
A long line of pilgrims had already formed early in the morning before the viewing officially began at 9 a.m. Rome time.
