Utah Enacts 72-Hour Waiting Period for Abortion; It Now Has Longest Abortion Waiting Time in US

The Christian Post website reports today (May 9, 2012) that Utah has become the first state to enact a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking an abortion. The new law took effect yesterday.

Sponsored by Republican Representative Steve Eliason, the new law expands the previous 24-hour waiting period for an abortion by two days -- thus making it the longest waiting period in the country.

Eliason said, "At the end of the day, it's a consumer-protection law."

But Karen Galloway -- president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah -- opposed the new law, and said, "The former waiting period allowed a woman to take all the time she needed to make a decision."
