N. Carolina Passes Amend. to Ban Gay Marriage; Becomes the 28th State to Have Amend. to Ban It

North Carolina voters today (May 8, 2012) passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage via a statewide ballot measure, the Washington Post website reports.

North Carolina already had a statute banning gay marriage.

Amendment One declares that "marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state."

Twenty-eight states now have constitutional amendments that ban gay marriage; another ten states ban it by statute.
