Court Ruling Stops Construction of Tenn. Mosque; Local Officials Did Not Give Public Enough Notice

The Washington Times website reports today (May 30, 2012) that construction of a Tennessee mosque -- that has been strongly opposed by critics of Islam -- will be stopped, as a result of a judge ruling yesterday that local officials did not give the public adequate notice before the meeting where it was approved.

Chancellor Robert Corlew found that the Rutherford County Planning Commission did not do enough to inform the public of the May 2010 meeting when it approved the site plan for the Islamic Center in Murfreesboro -- a city of about 100,000 people southeast of Nashville.

Saleh Sbenaty -- a spokesman for the mosque -- said the ruling was disappointing, but his group remained committed to building the Islamic center.

Kevin Fisher -- the head plaintiff in the court case -- said, "Justice is served."
