Mass. Cath. Paper Retracts Same-Sex Defamation; Columnist Daniel Avila Wrote It Was Work of Devil

A Massachusetts-based Catholic publication has retracted an opinion column in which the author suggested that same-sex attraction was the work of the devil, the Christian Post website reports today (November 4, 2011).

Daniel Avila -- a policy adviser for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) -- issued an apology on November 2 after the column was retracted from "The Pilot" newspaper.

"The Church opposes, as I do, all unjust discrimination and the violence against persons that unjust discrimination inspires," wrote Avila.

Kara Suffredini -- executive director of Mass Equality, a gay advocacy organization located in Boston -- was critical of the episode. She said "The Pilot" -- as well as the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy -- were unfit to judge same-sex attraction, given "their own past scandals."

POST SCRIPT: The Associated Press website reports today (November 4, 2011) that Daniel Avila resigned his job today with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as a result of his recent defamatory column on same-sex attraction in "The Pilot" Catholic newspaper.
