The Pentagon said today (October 15, 2019) that U.S. fighter jets and gunship helicopters were being used to confront Turkish-backed militants in northern Syria after they came "very close" to U.S. troops in Ain Issa, according to the RT website.
Washington also sent a complaint today to Ankara.
Although U.S. troops have been withdrawing from Syria for the past week, some Special Forces troops were still in the area of Ain Issa located about halfway between the Turkey-Syria border and the former Islamic State (IS) "capital" of Raqqa.
Last week, Turkey launched an attack in northern Syria on territory held by Kurdish militants allied with the U.S.; however, the troops used by Turkey in the attack appear to be jihadist terrorists. A senior U.S. official today called these jihadists "thugs and bandits and pirates that should be wiped off the face of the earth."
