A major new study finds that cutting back on eating red meat or processed meat will not significantly reduce a person's risk of heart disease or cancer, the UPI website reports today (October 1, 2019).
"Based on research, we cannot say with any certainty that eating red meat or processed meat causes cancer, diabetes, or heart disease," said senior researcher Bradley Johnston, associate professor of community health and epidemiology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Using the evidence collected by the research, a panel of experts issued new dietary guidelines saying most adults can eat as much red and processed meat as they like.
Johnston added, "This is not just another study on red and processed meat, but a series of five high-quality systematic reviews to inform dietary recommendations."
