Poland Now Plans to Rescind Its Court Reforms; EU Warned Reforms Belittled Poland's Judiciary

Following threats of fines and the loss of its right to vote in the EU (European Union), Poland is now working on a proposition to change some laws that apply to the country's Supreme Court, including changing the age when judges are required to retire, the Euro News website reports today (November 21, 2018).

It follows legislation that was implemented last summer, requiring Supreme Court judges to retire at the age of 65 instead of 70.

It affected more than a third of judges in Poland's top court.

Critics said at the time that the reform was the latest in a series of government measures aimed at politicizing the judiciary.
