Ukrainian Orthodox Church Granted Autonomy; Patriarch Bartholomew Ends Control by Moscow

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople -- head of the Orthodox Christian Church -- met with Moscow Patriarchate head Kirill on August 31 to discuss autocephaly (self-government) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Interfax website reports today (September 3, 2018).

Patriarch Bartholomew told Patriarch Kirill that he has decided to grant the Ukrainian Orthodox Church autocephaly, in order to overcome division in the Orthodox Church in Ukraine -- the largest country in Europe.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church was under the jurisdiction of Moscow for several decades before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989.

An official report on Patriarch Bartholomew's decision to grant the Ukrainian Orthodox Church autonomy is expected to be issued in the near future.
