Due to intelligence information revealing Syrian President Bashar Assad is planning to use chemical weapons in an upcoming attack on rebel-controlled Idlib province, President Donald Trump said the U.S. will retaliate swiftly against Syria if it uses chemical weapons, the Times of Israel website reports today (September 18, 2018).
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford -- the United States' top military official -- said today that he has had dialogue with President Trump regarding military consequences, if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons.
Some three million people live in Idlib province and its adjacent region.
The United Nations also has warned Syria that an attack on Idlib poses the threat of a humanitarian disaster.
