French President Emmanuel Macron attended a pre-Rosh Hashanah ceremony at the Great Synagogue of Paris last night, the first time a sitting president has done so, the JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency) website reports today (September 5, 2018).
Macron did not speak at the ceremony, since France has a strict separation of state and religion.
Jewish leaders who spoke at the program focused on the rising anti-Semitism pervading the country.
"Our children leave" because "France, the land of asylum, is becoming a land of exile for Jews," said Joel Mergui, president of the Consistoire organization that provides religious services to French Jews.
