Closing an ecumenical encounter with Catholic and Orthodox Christian leaders from the Middle East, Pope Francis said today (July 7, 2018) that "truces maintained by walls and displays of power will not lead to peace," but only a concrete desire to engage in dialogue will work, according to the Crux website.
He demanded that Christians in the Middle East are treated as "full citizens."
The pope also addressed the need for peace in Jerusalem, saying only a negotiated solution between Israelis and Palestinians will lead to a lasting peace.
The pope's words came at the closing of an ecumenical encounter he hosted in the southern Italian city of Bari, a pilgrimage site for Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Christians.
