Trump: Netanyahu Blocks Mideast Peace Talks; Views Israeli PM as Bigger Problem Than Abbas

President Trump told United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was more of an obstacle to peace efforts in the Middle East than Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, The Hill website reports today (October 4, 2017).

Trump reportedly made the comments during a meeting with Guterres at last month's U.N. General Assembly in New York City.

A Western diplomat who had been briefed on the meeting said Trump had acknowledged both Netanyahu and Abbas were being "problematic," but the Israeli leader was "the bigger problem."

Many international affairs experts believe that Netanyahu is not in favor of peace talks because such talks would endanger Israel's retention of the Arab territories it seized in the 1967 war, and they could also put an end to Israeli construction of settlements on the occupied land.
