Iraqi Forces Capture IS's Last Stronghold in Iraq; Capture Town of Hawija Near Oil City of Kirkuki

Iraqi forces today (October 5, 2017) captured the town of Hawija and the surrounding area from the Islamic State (IS), although some fighting still raged in a pocket to the north and east of the town where the militants were surrounded, according to the Huffington Post website.

The only area that remains under the control of the IS in Iraq now is a stretch alongside the western border with Syria.

Hawija is near the Kurdish-held oil-rich city of Kirkuki.

Kirkuki shaped up as a flashpoint last month when the Kurds included the city in a referendum that voted in favor of an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq.
