Philippine Troops Bomb IS Militants in Marawi; Over 1K Killed in Marawi Since IS May Usurping

Philippine troops today (October 15, 2017) bombed militants loyal to the Islamic State (IS) group who have held out for over four months in a southern city, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

The fighting in the Philippine city of Marawi has killed more than 1,000 people. The radical Muslims had intended to establish a local IS caliphate there.

"We are hoping that we will end this Marawi siege very soon," Colonel Romeo Brawner, deputy commander of the task force battling the IS militants, told reporters.

Pro-IS fighters occupied parts of Marawi on May 23, 2017. Since then, 822 militants, 162 government troops, and 47 civilians have been killed, Brawner said.
