U.S. Soldier Killed Fighting IS in Afghanistan; U.S. and Afghan Forces Battling IS Since 2015

A U.S. soldier was killed fighting the Islamic State (IS) offshoot in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangahar yesterday, the Chicago Tribune website reports today (April 9, 2017).

The soldier's name has not been released in order to allow family members to be notified first.

U.S. and Afghan forces have been fighting the Islamic State in Afghanistan's restive east since 2015.

The Taliban -- the insurgent Islamist group that has fought the United States and the Afghan government since 2001 -- has also routinely clashed with the Islamic State.
