Live Mike Records Obama on Missile Defense; Tells Russian Pres. "After Election" He Can Help

The Slate website reports today (March 26, 2012) that President Obama -- not realizing a microphone was recording what he was saying -- told Russian President Dmitri Medvedev that a compromise over a contentious missile defense system in Europe could be reached after the 2012 U.S. presidential elections.

"This can be solved, but it is important for him to give me space," Obama said, referring to incoming Russian President Vladimir Putin. Obama added, "After my election, I have more flexibility."

Obama's comments tend to convey that he intends to become more autocratic -- and perhaps more independent of Congress -- after the U.S. presidential election is held in November.

About six months ago -- in another incident in which he did not realize a microphone was turned on -- President Obama told French President Nicolas Sarkozy, "You're fed up with him (that is, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), but I have to deal with him even more often than you do."
