The White House warned Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu against "inflammatory rhetoric" yesterday after the Israeli prime minister claimed a Palestinian Islamic leader convinced Hitler to carry out the Holocaust, the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website reports today (October 23, 2015).
Netanyahu on October 20 said Hitler was not planning to exterminate the Jews -- he was only planning to expel them from Europe -- until he met Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin al-Husseini, a Palestinian nationalist, in 1941. Netanyahu -- who has been enraged by a multitude of violent incidents in Israel by Palestinians in recent weeks -- added that al-Husseini convinced Hitler to "burn the Jews."
White House spokesman Eric Schultz said, "I don't think there's any doubt here at the White House who is responsible for the Holocaust that killed six million Jews."
He added: "We here continue to stress publicly and privately... the importance of preventing inflammatory rhetoric, accusations or actions on both sides [that] can feed the violence... inflammatory rhetoric needs to stop."
