U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he was cautiously optimistic following talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday about possible steps to end the latest wave of deadly violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories, the Wall Street Journal website reports today (Octoner 22, 2015).
Following his four-hour meeting with the Israeli leader in Berlin, Kerry said he planned to raise the proposals -- which he didn't specify -- with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, Jordan on October 24.
Kerry described his meting with Netanyahu "as one that gave me a cautious measure of optimism that there may be a way to defuse the situation and begin to find a way forward."
Since mid-September, nine Israelis have been killed in stabbing, shooting, and stoning attacks by Palestinians. Nearly 50 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli security forces.
