Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu was slammed by both Palestinians and Israelis today (October 21, 2015) for stating that a Palestinian Islamic leader convinced Adolf Hitler to exterminate European Jews during World War II, the Euro News website reports.
Netanyahu's comments have been described as "historically inaccurate" by Holocaust scholars. Critics say his statements amount to incitement against modern-day Palestinians amid a wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence and tension.
Netanyahu was speaking to a group of Jewish leaders yesterday and said... "Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews at the time [when Hitler was visited in late 1941 in Berlin by Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin al-Husseini], he wanted to expel the Jews. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, 'If you expel them, they'll all come here. So what should I do with them?' he asked. He said, 'Burn them.'"
Tom Segev -- a leading Israeli historian who has conducted extensive research on the Holocaust -- said today that the notion that Hitler needed to be convinced to exterminate the Jews was "entirely absurd." Segev stressed, "one cannot say Hitler needed his [Husseini's] advice."
