A Bulgarian border guard shot and killed an Afghan man after he illegally entered the European Union (EU) country from Turkey, the Daily Caller website reports today (October 16, 2015).
The man was part of a group of around 50 migrants trying to sneak into Bulgaria, which is part of the EU. The remaining refugees were detained after the incident.
Officials say the man died when a bullet -- meant to be a warning -- ricocheted and hit him after the migrants resisted arrest.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the incident is the first of its kind since the start of the migrant crisis, and the agency is "deeply shocked." It also called for an independent investigation of the death from the Bulgarian authorities.
