Fla. Legislator Moves to Ban Under-16 Marriages; Would Not Allow Teens 15 or Younger to Marry

Rep. Cynthia Stafford -- a state lawmaker in Florida -- has introduced a bill to scrap a law that allows people 15 or younger to marry if they have a baby or are expecting one, the Newser website reports today (March 19, 2014).

"Marriage is an adult responsibility," she said.

Stafford told a House subcommittee that "in 2012 we had a 13-year-old groom in the state of Florida."

Her bill would still allow 16- and 17-year-olds to marry with parental consent.
