State-owned media in Moscow reported today (March 16, 2014) that the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea voted overwhelmingly in favor of seceding from Ukraine and becoming a part of Russia, according to the Washington Times website.
Exit polls announced on Russian television this afternoon claimed 93 percent of voters who turned out for Sunday's referendum voted for unification with Russia.
While Western leaders awaited an official announcement of the much anticipated Crimea referendum, the Obama administration issued a statement this afternoon asserting that the vote was illegal.
"This referendum is contrary to Ukraine's constitution, and the international community will not recognize the results of a poll administered under threats of violence and intimidation from Russian military intervention that violates international law," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in the statement.
