Priest in Italy Burns Photo of Benedict at Mass; Says Pope Abandoned Catholics When Needed

A priest in a rural parish in northwestern Italy burned a picture of ex-Pope Benedict yesterday during Sunday mass, claiming the pontiff "abandoned" the world's Catholics when they needed him most, the New York Daily News website reports today (March 4, 2013).

"A shepherd does not leave his flock!" thundered Don Andrea Maggi, the 67-year-old pastor in Castel Vittorio, a medieval hilltop town near the French border, according to a report in "Corriere della Sera."

"I am doing it because he was not a Pope," Maggi said after burning the photo in front of dozens of horrified parishioners in the middle of Sunday's mass. "He abandoned us."

"It was a shocking gesture, committed before a dozen children," said witness Gianstefano Orengo, the mayor of the town.
