Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood government today (March 13, 2013) issued a statement on its Facebook page denouncing a draft United Nations document defending women against violence and establishing key rights, according to the Global Post website.
The Muslim Brotherhood said that the UN document includes items that "collide with the principles of Islam and its basic unanimous elements of [the] Quran."
According to the powerful Islamic group -- the party of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi -- the UN document would "destroy Islamic ethics, and seek to demolish the institution of the family," the Muslim Brotherhood said, describing it as tantamount to an "intellectual and cultural invasion."
In Islamic cultures, women, for the most part, are treated as inferior to men, as they are denied many of the rights that are granted to men. For example, in some Islamic countries, a woman cannot leave the house without permission from a man.
